Desperate search for survivors as 240 confirmed dead in Colombia earthquake | BBC News

Published

on

Rescue workers in Colombia are working against the clock to free survivors trapped in buildings and under rubble following Monday’s powerful earthquake.

More than 240 people have been confirmed dead – most in the cities of Cali and Pereira.

The magnitude 7.4 quake struck at 07:34 local time and was felt across an enormous area, stretching for hundreds of miles across western Colombia – with fresh aftershocks still being felt the following day.

A state of emergency has been declared by President Abelardo de la Espriella. Giving an update from Pereira, one of the worst hit cities, President Espriella said as well as those killed, thousands had been injured, and hundreds remain missing.

Clive Myrie present BBC News at Ten reporting by Jose Carlos Cueto.

UK prime minister Andy Burnham calls emergency Cobra meeting on extreme heat | BBC Newscast

Published

on

We look at the government’s response to extreme heat, and fires around the country, as he chairs a meeting of the government’s emergency Cobra committee, as temperatures are set to soar again.

Firefighters are continuing to tackle a wildfire in the New Forest, Hampshire, which started on Sunday, and in Scotland fire crews are still fighting a wildfire in the Cairngorms that first broke out on 15 July.

We look at what the government is doing and the political position it puts Andy Bunham, in with Green Party leader Zack Polanski saying it means there should be no new oil and gas extraction in the North Sea.

Scotland editor James Cook is back on, as well as broadcasting legend Kirsty Wark, who we try to convince that solar eclipses aren’t boring.

Trump cancels Iran strikes subject to deal being made ‘rapidly’ | BBC News

Published

on

Donald Trump says he has cancelled strikes against Iran, provided a deal is struck “rapidly” with the country.

In a post on Truth Social, the US president said he had been asked by Iran and other countries in the Middle East to “hold off” on any attack as the “perimeters” of a deal had been agreed.

Trump’s comments came after reports that the US and Israel may have been planning new, intense strikes on Iran.
