🥊 Oscar De La Hoya vs Bernard Hopkins | UNDISPUTED Middleweight Titles | FULL FIGHT HIGHLIGHTS
Oscar De La Hoya vs. Bernard Hopkins, billed as It’s History, was a professional boxing match contested on September 18, 2004 for Hopkins’ WBA (Undisputed), WBC, IBF, and The Ring middleweight championships, and Oscar De La Hoya’s WBO middleweight championship.
After losing the WBA and WBC light middleweight titles to Shane Mosley in September 2003, five-division world champion Oscar De La Hoya decided to move up to the middleweight division to challenge undisputed middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins, who had been middleweight champion for nearly a decade and had not lost a fight in over 11 years. Before the two would fight each other, De La Hoya and Hopkins would first have to get past Felix Sturm and Robert Allen, respectively.
In a doubleheader event broadcast by HBO pay-per-view, Hopkins easily defeated Allen by a lopsided unanimous decision to retain his undisputed title, but De La Hoya struggled in his match with Sturm and only narrowly escaped with a unanimous decision (115–113 on all three scorecards) to capture Sturm’s WBO middleweight title (becoming the first six-division champion in boxing history) and officially put his anticipated match with Hopkins on.
Many, including Sturm himself, felt that De La Hoya had clearly lost the fight and had been gifted the decision for the lucrative Hopkins–De La Hoya bout to continue forward. Sturm and his promoter filed a protest with the Nevada Athletic Commission in an attempt to have the decision overturned, but commission head Marc Ratner turned it down, stating there was no basis for a review.
With Sturm’s protest out of the way, De La Hoya and Hopkins would proceed with their fight and agreed to a catchweight – a rarity for championship fights – of 158 pounds, in order to level the playing fields for the smaller De La Hoya, who had only one middleweight bout to his credit. Because of Hopkins’ size advantage and his vast experience in the middleweight division, De La Hoya, for the first time in his professional career, was considered the “underdog”, with the odds makers in Las Vegas favoring Hopkins at 2–1. De La Hoya, however, was scheduled to make a career high $30 million, while Hopkins would net $10 million, also a career high.

Lennox Lewis 23–0 (19 KO) vs. Frank Bruno 36–3 (35 KO), billed as The Battle of Britain, was a professional boxing match contested on 1 October 1993 at National Stadium, Cardiff in Wales.
It was between WBC heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis, who was making the second defence of his title and Frank Bruno, who was fighting in his third world title bout, his two previous title fights having been unsuccessful.
Lennox Lewis had won the WBC heavyweight title when Riddick Bowe refused to fight him, so the WBC gave Lewis the title on 14 January 1993. Lewis had previously been the WBC’s number one contender by defeating Razor Ruddock. Lewis then became the first British world heavyweight champion since Bob Fitzsimmons lost the title on 9 June 1899. Lewis went on to defend his title by defeating Tony Tucker.
Frank Bruno had previously lost to Tim Witherspoon on 19 July 1986 for the WBA heavyweight title at Wembley Stadium and to Mike Tyson on 25 February 1989 for the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles at the Las Vegas Hilton.
The fight was the first time that two British-born boxers had fought for the world heavyweight title, although Bruno had questioned how British Lewis really was, as he had won a gold medal for Canada at the 1988 Olympic Games as an amateur. Bruno described Lewis as “…not British”, but said “It’s about boxing. I’m sick and tired of his pretences. He calls himself champion. He acts like he’s a Sugar Ray Leonard or a Willie Pep or a Joe Louis”, and that “Nobody cares about Lennox Lewis in Britain.”
To counter the Bruno claim that he was “not British”, Lewis said, “What was I supposed to do? Not follow my mother to Canada?”, “Look, I’ve fought more British fighters than that guy has. He makes a fool of himself, dressing up in girls’ clothing on television”. Lewis called Bruno an “Uncle Tom”.
Bruno weighed in at 238 pounds (108 kg), and Lewis at 229 pounds (104 kg).
It was a pay-per-view event with HBO in the United States and on Sky Sports in the United Kingdom.
