The mother of PC Andrew Harper has told the BBC she is “devastated” two of his killers remain eligible for early release after the UK government revised plans to tackle overcrowding.
 
Prisoners who committed rape, grooming, and serious child sex offences will be excluded from the scheme for England and Wales, the government announced on Monday.
 
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he “wanted to go even further”, but that would not be possible without the prison system collapsing and putting the public “at much greater risk”.
 
PC Harper, 28, was killed in 2019 when he was dragged by a car down a country road as three teenagers fled the scene of a quad bike theft in Berkshire.

A new fund is working to save 100 of the world’s most threatened species.

The Phoenix Species Project will put $200m (£149m) towards restoring animals in the wild and stopping them from going extinct. It’s one of the largest funds ever focused on species recovery.

The project is a collaboration between the Bezos Earth Fund and Re:wild – a non profit co-founded by actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

It comes at a time when conservationists have warned about a decline in global biodiversity, and just a few weeks after the Trump administration rolled back endangered species protections.

It has been a week since President Trump announced that the Board of Peace had reached an “historic agreement” in Gaza for the “complete disarmament” of Hamas.

But in the days since, the situation has become more uncertain. Hamas has said that it will only disarm when Israel withdraws its forces from Gaza, but Israeli officials insist they will not withdraw until the weapons are handed over.

On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had not agreed to the plan.

A group of prominent, controversial influencers made a visit to Russia this summer.

They included Andrew Tate, Candace Owens and British far-right anti-Islam activist Tommy Robinson. They argue that Russia is upholding the traditional conservative values they fear are in decline at home.

It is certainly an image Vladimir Putin is keen to project. Two years ago Russia set up a special “shared values” visa, which makes it easier for Westerners to move to the country if they align with its supposed ‘traditional spiritual and moral beliefs’.

Russia claims thousands of Westerners have applied.
