For more than a thousand years, Kyoto endured court intrigue, samurai rule, civil war, fire, political eclipse, and reinvention—yet remained one of Japan’s defining cultural cities. This episode follows Kyoto from the founding of Heian-kyō in 794 through the brilliance of the Heian court, the rise of the warrior class, the devastation of the Ōnin War, reunification under Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, and Ieyasu, the Meiji Restoration, and the modern preservation of the ancient capital.

This documentary combines cinematic AI reconstructions with 27 reviewed licensed and public-domain maps, artworks, artifacts, historic photographs, and present-day site images. Reconstructions are illustrative scenes, not surviving photographs. Real historical sources are shown complete using a source-preserving renderer.
