Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign released an ad earlier this week featuring his opponent Amy Acton’s estranged mother.

In the clip, she urges people in the state of Ohio not to vote for her daughter, saying she has “lied her entire life”.

Acton’s past is well documented. She and her brother were removed from their mother’s custody as children, which Acton says occurred after her stepfather sexually assaulted her at the age of 12.

Acton’s brother is among those who have condemned the ad, saying turning alleged sexual assault into “a political talking point” was a “despicable low”.

Ramaswamy confirmed on Tuesday that the ad came from his campaign, and he later pledged to spend $4m (£2.9m) to further air it.

On this episode, Marianna and Matt examine how various platforms’ responses to so-called trauma porn have evolved since an initial tightening of restrictions following the livestreamed Christchurch shootings in 2019.

Australian MP Helen Haines has had both her legs amputated after being allegedly attacked with a car.

Haines received severe injuries after being struck in what police say was a targeted incident outside her electoral office in Wangaratta on Monday.

During a press conference, her husband, Phil, confirmed she lost both but added “she is alive and stable”.

Brendan Nugent, 43, has been charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official.

Police have not ruled out additional charges, including attempted murder.

The US midterms are usually swayed by domestic matters like economy and the cost of living. They’re often a pulse check on voter sentiment towards the incumbent party or a reflection of local political battles and regional trends.

Rarely are they impassioned referendums on a specific foreign policy issue. But for some voters this year in Michigan — where Democrat hopeful Abdul El-Sayed is facing off against Republican Mike Rogers — the Senate race is shaping up to be just that.

Two weeks out from the crucial polling day, The Global Story’s Asma Khalid shares her reporting from Michigan, where a debate among Democrats over the conflicts in the Middle East has become a touchstone issue, especially among the state’s large Arab American and Jewish communities.
