TikTok’s rise to the top of the social media hierarchy is one of the most remarkable stories in tech history. Launched globally in 2018 after Chinese parent company ByteDance merged its app Musical.ly into the platform, TikTok quickly transformed from a quirky lip-sync app into a global cultural powerhouse.

What set TikTok apart was its highly addictive, algorithm-driven content feed. Unlike platforms that relied on users following accounts, TikTok’s “For You Page” delivered an endless stream of highly personalized, short-form videos based purely on user behavior. This innovation democratized virality—anyone could go viral, regardless of follower count—which appealed to both creators and viewers alike.
