Jacob Rees-Mogg warns that Labour’s reported plans to introduce price caps on basic foods could have devastating consequences for the UK economy. Speaking on the growing debate around government intervention in supermarkets, Rees-Mogg argues that controlling prices may sound appealing politically, but history shows it can quickly lead to shortages, panic buying, and economic disruption. “Let’s hope the government has the wit and wisdom to not follow this route,” he says.
The former Cabinet minister explains why interfering with market pricing could create “empty shelves” and “long queues” across Britain, drawing comparisons to failed economic policies seen in other countries. Rees-Mogg lays out what he calls “basic economics” as he criticises Labour’s approach to tackling the cost of living crisis and rising food prices. The discussion centres on whether government-imposed controls would actually help struggling households — or make matters significantly worse.
Economic journalist Mani Basharzad also reacts to reports that the Treasury is encouraging supermarkets to consider voluntary price caps on essential food items. Basharzad questions whether such measures would reduce inflation or simply create new problems for businesses and consumers alike.
