What Is Happening To Missouri’s Rural Hospitals Should Be Front Page News
Missouri rural hospitals closing should be front page news — 50% of Missouri’s 58 remaining rural hospitals are at risk of closing. 21% are at immediate risk of closing within two to three years. 25 hospitals have already shut down statewide since 2014, many in rural areas. Missouri ranks among the 10 worst states in the country for rural hospital closures. The primary cause: private insurance plans — including Medicare Advantage — are paying rural hospitals less than what it costs to deliver services to patients. Hospitals operating on margins this thin cannot survive rising labor costs, inflation, cybersecurity mandates, and declining rural populations simultaneously.
The consequences are already being felt — rural maternity units have closed across Missouri after hospitals failed to recruit obstetric providers, creating maternity deserts where expectant mothers drive 45 minutes or more to give birth. Emergency rooms that served as the only trauma response for entire counties are gone. In many rural communities, the hospital was the largest employer — its closure doesn’t just eliminate healthcare, it eliminates the economic engine that kept the town viable.
