UK waters down new Russian oil sanctions as fuel prices rise | BBC News

Published

on

Plans to impose a ban on UK imports of diesel and jet fuel made from Russian oil in third countries have been watered down amid concerns over supplies and price rises.

The UK government will now “phase in” some new sanctions over the coming months due to the effective blockade of the key Strait of Hormuz waterway since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran.

The Foreign Office denied the shift in policy could be described as a “waiver” on sanctions aimed at hurting Russia’s economy, but admitted extra flexibilities were required.

Vladyslav Vlasiuk, sanctions commissioner for Ukraine, said he understood “the rationale behind the UK’s decision”, but said he disagreed with the approach.

Xbox CEO on the “crisis” facing gaming hardware | BBC News

Published

Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma says the gaming giant needs to be “thinking about” affordability for its next-generation console, amid a “crisis” in computing prices.

Speaking exclusively to the BBC’s Laura Cress at Gamescom in Cologne, she said rising hardware costs partly driven by AI spending mean firms need to find ways to make gaming affordable.

She also revealed gamers will soon be able to get digital versions of many of the physical games they currently own, potentially meaning their old games can be played on future Xbox consoles without having to put a disc in a drive.

Charlie Kirk case prosecutors can seek death penalty, says judge | BBC News

Published

on

A 23-year-old Utah man has pleaded not guilty to the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk – as a judge ruled prosecutors can seek the death penalty at trial.

Tyler Robinson denies aggravated murder, a capital offence in Utah, and six other charges in connection with the shooting of Kirk at a campus event on 10 September 2025.

Defence lawyers had tried to have the death penalty taken off the table, but prosecutors argued that aggravating factors, such as firing into a crowd in the presence of children, warranted a capital trial.

Turning Point USA co-founder Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem.
