The AI users falling into delusion | The Global Story
In just the last few years, AI chatbots have become routine aspects of many people’s everyday lives. They are being used as search engines, agony aunts and sources of companionship.
In rare cases though, AI chatbots have sent users down a dark path. In a new BBC investigation, population correspondent Stephanie Hegarty speaks to people who have experienced delusions after talking to chatbots – including one man who grabbed a hammer and prepared for war after his chatbot told him it was sentient.
**Warning: this episode includes discussions of sexual abuse, suicide and upsetting scenes**

AI just created a brand new virus. Should we be scared? | BBC News
Artificial Intelligence has been used to design brand new viruses that are fully functional and can replicate in the laboratory, say US researchers.
It is the first time whole genomes have been successfully designed by AI.
The resulting 16 novel viruses were created to infect bacteria and pose no threat to people. But experts have also warned AI-designed viruses raise “urgent” safety and security concerns.

Netanyahu rejects Trump’s Gaza peace plan | BBC News
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected US President Donald Trump’s 15-point plan for Gaza, stating that no military pull-out will happen until Hamas is “genuinely” disarmed.
Trump’s Board of Peace said last month it had reached an agreement for the “complete disarmament” of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza.
But Hamas said handing over its heavy weapons was contingent on Israel ending “all forms of aggression” and withdrawing its forces from Gaza.
Israel has continued to carry out strikes on Gaza since agreeing to an initial ceasefire in the territory last October.
“Israel rejects the 15-point document,” Netanyahu said at a cabinet meeting.
The Israeli military “will not carry out any withdrawal until Hamas is genuinely disarmed and will continue to thwart threats against our forces and our citizens”, he added.
A Hamas official told the BBC on Sunday the group “reaffirms it commitment” to the agreement and it was ready “to engage seriously and responsibly in implementing” the 15-point plan.
They called on mediators to ensure “that all parties comply with what has been agreed”.
Israel’s rejection signals another blow for Trump’s Gaza peace plan which was announced in September last year.

President Biden’s $4 trillion plan to tax the rich and invest in America – BBC News
President Biden has marked his first 100 days in office by launching radical and ambitious proposals for America, a “once in a generation” investment plan as he called it.
If enacted, it could be transformational. It comes at a huge cost – four trillion dollars. Much of it would be paid for by tax rises for corporations and for the most wealthy.
The American Families Plan aims to cut child poverty and put a cap on child care costs.
It’s hoped it will create millions of jobs through a massive programme of investment in infrastructure, broadband and green energy.
However President Biden faces a battle in Congress, especially over raising higher taxes.
Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by north America editor Jon Sopel.
