US military launches strikes against Iran to “further degrade” capabilities | BBC News

Published

on

The US military says it launched another round of strikes against Iran to “further degrade” its capabilities to attack ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The strikes – the 10th consecutive night of attacks – come after US President Donald Trump vowed to punish Iran for the deaths of US soldiers.

In response, Iran said it struck two oil tankers in the waterway, as well as US military assets in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan, state agency IRNA reported.
President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran was now fighting a “full-scale war” with the US. Trump earlier said Iran had been hit “very hard” the previous night “in honour” of three US soldiers killed recently – two in Jordan and one in Iraq.

US Central Command (Centcom) said its latest strikes had hit Iranian “military command centres, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and air defence systems”.

Thousands of mosquitos being released in Washington DC | BBC News

Published

on

About 600,000 mosquitoes are being released across the Washington DC area this summer to help reduce local mosquito populations.

Only male mosquitoes – infected with the naturally occurring bacteria Wolbachia – are released. They don’t bite humans, and the bacteria they carry prevents any eggs produced after mating from hatching.

The release of mosquitos comes as climate change creates more favourable conditions for the insects to survive and reproduce, increasing concerns about the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.

The US-Saudi nuclear deal explained | The Global Story

Published

on

When the Trump administration announced last week that it had signed a nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia, the agreement was held up by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright as evidence that ”the American nuclear renaissance is underway”.

Although the text of the deal has not yet been made public, US media report that it could allow Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium in the future. But shortly after the announcement, President Trump took to Truth Social to qualify the news – saying that the deal hinges on Saudi Arabia’s willingness to recognise the state of Israel.

Is that likely? And could the deal derail ongoing negotiations between the US and Iran? We speak to BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner.
