No Permission: How Vancouver’s 1980s Hardcore Scene Defied the World.

In February 1981, a punk band from Vancouver released an album called Hardcore ’81. It gave a new musical movement its name. That movement—hardcore punk—exploded during the 1980s, with Vancouver as a key player.

This documentary explores the 1980s Vancouver hardcore scene—a “fiercely independent scene created from nothing” that operated out of all-ages venues, DIY ethics, and a defiant “no permission” attitude. From the legendary Laundromat shows to the Smilin’ Buddha Cabaret, from D.O.A. to the Subhumans, this is the story of how a Canadian city helped define one of the most important underground music movements in history.

🇨🇦 The Birth of Canadian Hardcore

Canadian hardcore punk originated in the early 1980s. It was “harder, faster, and heavier” than the punk rock that preceded it. Influential early bands that formed in the Vancouver area included D.O.A. , the Subhumans, and The Skulls. Other well-known groups that moved to the Vancouver scene included Nomeansno and SNFU.

💿 Hardcore ’81: The Album That Named a Movement

On April 22, 1981, Vancouver quartet D.O.A. released their second album, Hardcore ’81. It “marked the first use of the term that came to define a faster, harder, more aggressive and political punk-rock style”. In 2016, Hardcore ’81 was declared the Polaris Heritage Prize public vote winner. D.O.A. is “often referred to as being among the ‘founders’ of hardcore punk, along with Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, and Bad Brains”.

🏛️ The Venues: Ground Zero for a Revolution

The scene revolved around a few key venues:

The Laundromat: A punk and new wave club that opened in 1980 in the former David Y.H. Lui dance theatre. Because it had no liquor license, it was all-ages. In February 1981, it hosted a two-night festival that “helped change the face of the underground in North America”. Acts included “a pre-Henry Rollins Black Flag”.

The Smilin’ Buddha Cabaret: At 109 East Hastings Street, it was “ground zero for Vancouver’s new independent music scene” and served as “Vancouver’s epicentre of punk rock” for 16-17 years.

The Downtown Eastside: “Canada’s poorest postal code” was “considered the home of Vancouver’s punk community and arguably the start of the hardcore subgenre”.

🎤 The Bands and the Sound

D.O.A.’s slogan was “Talk Minus Action Equals Zero”. Their lyrics and imagery frequently advocated anti-racism. Other notable bands included:

The Subhumans, whose album Death Was Too Kind featured the classic “Fuck You”

Dayglo Abortions (from Vancouver Island)

Death Sentence, formed in early 1984, “emerged as one of the most volatile and uncompromising forces of Canada’s second-wave hardcore punk movement”

It is “a slick, high-energy look at one of the most active punk and hardcore communities of the ’70s and early ’80s”.

Hardcore, as D.O.A. defined it, was “the true spirit of punk”—a rejection of poseurs and fashion, a return to raw, uncompromising energy. Vancouver was where that spirit found its name.

Why did the Vikings of Greenland disappear?

The Viking colony in Greenland survived for around 450 years after Erik the Red established the Norse settlements around 985 AD, but by the 15th century the Greenland Vikings had vanished. This is the mystery of Norse Greenland: the Viking settlement, the Little Ice Age, the walrus ivory trade and what happened to the last Norse people in Greenland.

The Vikings farmed Greenland for centuries.

They built farms, churches and even a cathedral. They raised livestock, hunted seals and traded walrus ivory with Europe.

Then the records stopped.

The last known written record from the Greenland Norse is a wedding at Hvalsey in 1408.

After that, silence.

There is no famous final battle. No enormous massacre site. No surviving account explaining exactly where the last Greenland Vikings went.

So what happened?

The Little Ice Age made farming and life in Greenland increasingly difficult. The Norse also depended on European trade, particularly valuable walrus ivory. As European trade networks changed, Greenland became increasingly isolated.

Rather than disappearing overnight, the evidence may point towards a gradual decline, with people leaving Greenland for Iceland, Norway or elsewhere until the Norse settlements eventually disappeared.

But the exact story remains debated.

In this History Mystery investigation, Alexandra follows the evidence behind the disappearance of the Greenland Vikings and asks what really happened to the last Norse settlers of Greenland.
