Did Marie Antoinette Really Say Let Them Eat Cake?

Published

on

🗝️ Marie Antoinette never said let them eat cake. The line was written by Rousseau around 1765 and attributed to an unnamed great princess, at a point when she was nine years old and living in Vienna. Her name was not attached to it in print until 1843, fifty years after she was executed.

But the sentence is not really about bread. It is an accusation about money — that this woman spent France into bankruptcy. So this episode does the arithmetic.

💰 THE ARITHMETIC
The diamond necklace, 1785: 1,600,000 livres. She refused to buy it, in writing, twice, and never received it. Jeanne de la Motte forged letters, staged a night meeting using a lookalike, and had the necklace broken up in London. Marie Antoinette had no part in it, and the affair destroyed her reputation anyway.

France’s cost of the American war of independence, 1778 to 1783: about 1,300,000,000 livres.

French national debt by 1788: about 4,000,000,000 livres, with interest consuming close to half of government revenue.

That debt is what forced the calling of the Estates General in 1789.

⚖️ WHAT SHE IS FAIRLY CHARGEABLE WITH
She overspent her allowance repeatedly, on clothes, jewellery and the household, and the King quietly covered it. She gambled heavily in the 1770s. Her own mother warned her about both, in letters that survive. The Petit Trianon and the hamlet cost in the order of a couple of million livres across about fifteen years.

There is no single agreed figure for her personal spending, and this video does not invent one. It puts the largest sum she was ever blamed for, a necklace she did not buy, next to the war, and lets the two numbers sit beside each other.

And Varennes was hers. The attempt to leave France in June 1791 was substantially her plan, and it ended any remaining chance of a constitutional monarchy.

📜 THE LAST LETTER
At about half past four on the morning of 16 October 1793 she wrote to her sister-in-law Elisabeth, asking her to look after the children, and telling her son never to try to avenge them. She did not sign it and did not address it.

It was seized, signed by the public prosecutor Fouquier-Tinville, and filed. Elisabeth was guillotined on 10 May 1794 without ever knowing it existed. The letter was later found among Robespierre’s papers and read aloud to the French parliament in 1816.
