Are we heading for World War Three? | The Global Story

Published

on

It has been almost a month since Israel and the United States launched their war against Iran, and already there have been strikes in more than a dozen countries, with reports of over 2,000 people killed across the region.

Iran has received a 15-point peace plan from the US according to reports from Pakistan, which is acting as an intermediary.

But earlier, a spokesman for Iran’s military said the US was “negotiating with itself”, adding: “Someone like us will never come to terms with someone like you.”

As the war drags on and more countries get involved, there are concerns this conflict could escalate into something truly global.

We speak to emeritus professor of International History at the University of Oxford, Margaret MacMillan, and explore how world wars start, how they end and what can be done to avoid them.

New episodes of The Global Story are released daily. If you’re in the UK, listen on BBC Sounds. If you live outside the UK, listen on BBC.com or wherever you get your podcasts.

Trump says US will not lift Hormuz blockade until deal made with Iran | BBC News

Published

on

The US will not lift its blockade on Iranian ports until a deal has been reached with Tehran, US President Donald Trump has said, amid continuing uncertainty over whether fresh talks to end the war will take place.

The blockade, which began a week ago, is “absolutely destroying Iran”, Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, adding his country was winning the conflict “by a lot”.

His comments come with the temporary US-Iran ceasefire set to end on Wednesday, but with no certainty over whether a second round of peace talks will go ahead in Pakistan.

At least three people, including a child, have been killed in overnight Russian attacks near the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, a local official said.

In the early hours of Saturday missiles hit east of the capital and witnesses reported hearing powerful explosions just days after strikes across Ukraine killed 21 people.

Emergency crews were also fighting fires at a building and fuel tank in Kyiv, Mayor Vitaly Klitchko wrote on Telegram.

Ukraine’s state emergency service DSNS shared photos showing garages, a business and a building on fire in Kyiv, adding: “The number of victims is being clarified.”
