France riots latest – curfews imposed in Paris and other cities after days of violent disorder

Published

on

French police have imposed curfews in cities across the country, after days of violent disorder, with shops looted and buildings set on fire.

In parts of central Paris, people will be banned from the streets between 2300 and 0600. In Nice the curfew applies only to young people. There are also restrictions in Lyon and Lille and Marseille.

The Prime Minister French PM Sébastien Lecornu gave local authorities the power to impose the curfews after days of rioting, with thousands of arrests. In a statement, he said: “We will not be dictated and ruled by the breakers, by the thieves, by the thugs”.

The disorder began last month with students protesting over school conditions but has escalated to take in a wide range of grievances. Lecornu claimed the movement was being led by what he called “ultra-Left radical groups” who he said were hoping to “create chaos” ahead of next year’s French presidential election. More than half a million people took to the streets at the weekend to protest against his government and its policies.

France’s neighbours in Europe are watching events with concern. Many of them, including Italy, Spain, Belgium, Portugal and Albania are seeing their own domestic protests, driven in large part by public anger over price increases and the rising cost of living.

Fiona Bruce presents at Ten reporting by Katya Adler, Nick Beake and Nick Thorpe.

A spokesperson for the Spanish emergency services told AFP “all resources are currently being deployed”, including “several fire crews, three helicopters, and two mobile intensive care units”.

Did Melania Trump broker a ceasefire in Ukraine? | The Global Story

Published

on

A ceasefire has come into effect in the Ukrainian city of Oleshky, on the front line of the war with Russia. Thousands of residents have been trapped there, cut off from food, water and electricity.

The ceasefire has been brokered by an unexpected figure: the US First Lady Melania Trump. But the Vatican is also claiming credit for the truce, raising questions about who helped bring it about – and what it might mean for the people caught up in the fighting.

After years of war and worsening conditions for civilians, a pause in the fighting could offer some relief. But how much protection will it really provide? And can this ceasefire hold?

The Global Story’s Tristan Redman speaks to Simon Shuster of The Atlantic about the state of the war, the future of US support and why Kyiv is increasingly worried about being left out of the room.
