Iran War: Trump warns Israel not to hit oil and gas sites as energy crisis deepens | BBC News

Published

on

President Trump says he had told Israel not to repeat its attacks on Iranian gas infrastructure, following tit-for-tat strikes that sent energy prices soaring .
Iran responded ‌to an Israeli attack on a major gas field by hitting Qatar’s Ras Laffan site, which processes around a fifth of the world’s liquefied natural gas. The damage will take years to repair. Iran has warned that it will show “zero restraint” if there are further attacks on its energy infrastructure.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel “acted alone” in attacking the Iranian gas field, as tensions mount over strikes on energy infrastructure across the region.

The attacks led to another spike in energy prices and US President Donald Trump later posted he had not known about them in advance. It’s raised more questions over how united Israel and the US remain in their war aims.

Netanyahu also denied that his country had dragged the US into the war or “misled” Trump, saying that no one could tell the US leader what to do.

Have wildfires and heatwaves changed holidays in Europe for good? | BBC News

Published

on

As parts of Europe continue to battle ongoing wildfires and persistent heatwaves, has the norm of a holiday in Europe changed forever?

Just this week, fires near tourist hotspots like Bordeaux were described as “fires of the century” and Spain declared a national emergency after wildfires swept near its capital of Madrid.

Meanwhile, the rising temperatures are having a knock-on effect to costs of holidaying in Europe, with sunbeds in some areas sometimes costing more than a flight to reserve.

Fires rage in France and Spain as heatwave returns | BBC News

Published

on

France and Spain continue to battle wildfires, as temperatures are expected to soar past 40C in some regions in the coming days.

Spain’s national weather service says the severe weather is forecast to last until “at least” Sunday, and warns of “extreme” fire risks as firefighters continue to battle the some of the worst blazes in the country’s history.

France’s south-west regions Gironde and Landes are under “yellow alert” for a heatwave expected to peak on Wednesday, further hampering efforts to contain “very unpredictable” blazes in Gironde.

The mayor of Bordeaux has said he is preparing for “all eventualities”, as one of the wildfires burning in France is 15km (nine miles) from the south-western city.
