EPA’s most efficient new vehicle of model year 1975 was a Honda Civic at 28.3 mpg; in 2024 it was the electric Hyundai Ioniq 6 at 137 mpg-equivalent, nearly five times as far on a gallon’s worth of energy (EPA real-world estimates). In 2010 the champion ran on hydrogen (Honda FCX, 60.2 mpge), and EPA’s preliminary 2025 figures name a Honda Civic as the best gas-only car again (36.6 mpg).

America’s average new minivan or van had 126 horsepower in model year 1984, the lowest in EPA’s records, and 260 in 2024: more than double, and nearly 700 lb heavier. Power peaked at 270 hp in 2018, then fell by about 30 hp in 2021 alone while real-world mpg rose from 23.4 to 27.3; and at 2.0% of new vehicles (11.0% in 1995), minivans and vans are the rarest they’ve been in EPA’s data since 1975.
