What’s going on in the minds of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin? | The Global Story
Fiona Hill is one of the foremost authorities on Vladimir Putin and a former White House advisor on Russia during Donald Trump’s first term.
Over the course of her career, she has sat across the table from the Russian president and helped shape US policy at the highest level.
Now that Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine has entered its fifth year, many are wondering whether peace talks between the Trump and Putin administration will ever lead to anything substantial.
We ask Fiona Hill what she thinks will be going through the minds of the two leaders.
We ask whether she thinks both men understand each other and whether there is any hope of a negotiated peace.
New episodes of The Global Story are released daily. If you’re in the UK, listen on BBC Sounds. If you live outside the UK, listen on BBC.com or wherever you get your podcasts.

On the frontline of Israeli settler violence in the West Bank | BBC News
In the Occupied West Bank, the isolated Palestinian village of Al-Mughayyir has seen more Israeli settler outposts appearing around it in recent years.
These outposts are illegal under both Israeli and international law. BBC Correspondent Lucy Williamson spent a week there, talking to Palestinians about the attacks by Israeli settlers.
Many Palestinians in the West Bank say that Israeli soldiers support settlers during these attacks.

Police fight gangs, guns and corruption in Ecuador’s war on drugs | BBC News
There is a state of emergency in Ecuador – the latest in a series – as the country battles local drug gangs with links to international cartels. Once one of South America’s most peaceful corners, Ecuador now has a murder rate that is one of the highest in the world.
The country has become the gateway for about 70% of the cocaine reaching the US and Europe – including the UK. The drug floods in from neighbouring Colombia and Peru, the two biggest cocaine producers in the world.
The BBC’s Orla Guerin has been at the heart of the war on drugs in Duran, one of the most gang-controlled cities in Ecuador.

US and Iran face return to all-out war as conflict escalates | BBC News
Iran and the US appear to be returning to all-out war, after 10 nights of escalating US airstrikes, and growing Iranian reprisals.
The Pentagon has confirmed that almost 100 US service personnel have been injured in the conflict in the past fortnight, while three US soldiers have been killed.
Iran’s revolutionary guards have targeted US military sites in Kuwait and Bahrain and carried out more attacks on tankers in the strait of Hormuz. Commercial shipping through the key shipping lane has again come to a standstill, putting further pressure on global energy supplies.
Yemen’s Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have announced a maritime embargo against Saudi Arabia, further threatening transit of oil and natural gas.
Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Jeremy Bowen and Sarah Smith.
