Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian apologises to Gulf nations for attacks | BBC News

Published

on

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has apologised to neighbouring states and says Tehran will not attack them “unless attacked first”, in a video address broadcast on state media.

Shortly after Pezeshkian’s address aired, Qatar said it had intercepted a missile attack.

There’s been an explosion near Dubai International Airport and the BBC has verified video that shows the apparent drone attack.

Some flights are now taking off and landing at the airport, after authorities had earlier suspended operations.

Kenya cult leader who told parents to starve children jailed for 191 murders | BBC News

Published

on

A Kenyan court has sentenced the leader of a doomsday cult, Paul Mackenzie, to 200 years in prison for murdering 191 people, all but one of them children.

Alongside 28 others, Mackenzie was found guilty of the murders for instructing members of his cult to starve their children to death so they could “meet Jesus”.

The self-styled pastor was arrested in 2023 after the discovery of more than 400 bodies in shallow graves in Shakahola forest near the Kenyan coast. The sprawling investigation into the cases shocked Kenya and drew international attention.

The court sentenced Mackenzie to 100 years in prison for homicide and another 100 years for offences related to starvation.

East Timor: ‘Stolen child’ reunites with family after 32 years – BBC News

Published

on

They became known as East Timor’s stolen generation – around 4,000 children taken from their families in the 1980s and 1990s during Indonesia’s brutal occupation. Some were conscripted into the Indonesian military; others taken by religious groups or state institutions. Indonesia calls them the “separated children” and denies they were taken by force.
Now a local NGO is taking them back to East Timor – now an independent nation – for the first time. The BBC followed Alberto Mohamed, now 43, as he returns to track down his family.
