Andy Burnham to announce plans for new North Sea oil and gas drilling | BBC News

Published

on

Andy Burnham will announce plans for new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea when he becomes prime minister, the BBC has been told.

The Labour Party’s 2024 manifesto – which the new leader said he would follow – had pledged to not issue new licences but to honour existing ones.

It is understood that the announcement will form part of a flurry of measures from Burnham, including plans to take water and energy companies under public control and a new council house-building programme.

As he prepares to take over from Keir Starmer on Monday, the Makerfield MP is also expected to announce his new cabinet.

In an exclusive investigation, a whistleblower has told the BBC how he unearthed evidence suggesting that US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick failed to disclose a business relationship with the paedophile financier, Jeffrey Epstein.

Simon Andriesz was a trader at one of Lutnick’s Wall Street firms, but it wasn’t until the Epstein files were released earlier this year that he says he confirmed a longstanding suspicion that his boss was misrepresenting his relationship with Epstein.

BBC financial investigations correspondent Andy Verity joins The Global Story’s Tristan Redman us to unpack the new investigation.

US denies hitting Iranian infrastructure in new wave of strikes | BBC News

Published

on

The US has denied Iranian accusations that it hit civilian infrastructure in the latest wave of air strikes since peace talks collapsed. Iran’s state media and provincial authorities said bridges, a train station and an airport were hit.

The BBC has confirmed an attack on a bridge in Hormozgan province.

President Donald Trump has threatened to hit Iranian bridges and power stations to force Tehran to return to talks to end the war.

Meanwhile, Kuwaiti authorities said Iranian strikes had hit power generation and water desalination stations, and Kuwait’s army said several personnel were wounded as a result of Iranian drones targeting facilities and camps on Friday morning.
