Can the Democrats take Texas from Trump? | BBC Americast
The midterm elections are under way – in the Republican stronghold of Texas at least. Early voting has begun in the primaries and Democrats are hopeful they could win a Texas Senate seat for the first time in over 30 years.
The election will have national consequences – Texas is one of America’s political power centres, and Republicans from here have dominated the national agenda from immigration, to the courts, to reshaping electoral districts. Taking back Texas could help Democrats take back the House, the Senate, and check Trump’s executive power in a way they have so far been unable to do in his second term. It could also realign the presidential election in 2028.
Justin and Anthony – who grew up in Texas and know its politics well – unpack the primaries, which are fast becoming the most expensive in modern US history. On the Republican side, there is meltdown and infighting, as Senator John Cornyn faces a serious challenge from Attorney General Ken Paxton. The US president – who is campaigning in Texas – hasn’t yet endorsed one candidate.
On the Democrat side, two of its biggest stars are fighting for the nomination. Jasmine Crockett, well known for her fiery public battles with the Trump administration and James Talarico, who is tipped as a future Democrat presidential candidate. We look at what their realistic chances are, and what it tells us about the future of the party.

The president of Fifa, Gianni Infantino, is under increasing pressure over his now-cancelled plan to sell stakes in the World Cup and other tournaments.
The European football confederation UEFA has said it has no confidence in him, and is threatening legal action. The football associations of Wales, Finland, Sweden and Serbia have withdrawn their support for his re-election as president, and England’s football association is set to follow suit.
The BBC’s sports reporter Joe Lynskey tells us how Mr Infantino has won favour with football authorities over his decade running Fifa – and what it will take for him to hang on now.
We also hear about Infantino’s close relationship with US President Donald Trump, whose extended family was linked to Fifa’s partial privatisation plans. The main investor was due to be Joshua Kushner, whose brother Jared Kushner is President Trump’s son-in-law.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino says he has scrapped the controversial plan to sell off stakes in the governing body’s major competitions, following widespread opposition.
Infantino said it had become clear the project had “created divisions” that are “no longer in the interest” of its original objective.
The Swiss official added: “As a result, this proposal will not proceed.”
Infantino had offered all 211 member associations $40m (£30m) if they backed a proposal for private investment in its tournaments, including the men’s and women’s World Cups.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino says he has scrapped the controversial plan to sell off stakes in the governing body’s competitions to private investors following widespread opposition.
Infantino said it had become clear the project had “created divisions” that are “no longer in the interest” of its original objective.
Infantino had offered Fifa’s 211 member associations $40m (£30m) if they backed a proposal for private investment in its tournaments, including the men’s and women’s World Cups.
However, Uefa – which governs European football – responded by voting to boycott World Cups if the plans went ahead, and other governing bodies also voiced their opposition.
