US launches ‘heavy’ strikes on Iran after attempted attack on American troops | BBC News

Published

on

The US military said it has completed a “heavy wave” of strikes against Iran in retaliation for Tuesday’s attempted ballistic missile attacks on American forces.

Centcom said it hit “dozens” of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets in response to Iran’s firing on US bases in Jordan and at ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian state media said the latest strikes had killed three people, including a two-year-old child, on Qeshm island, while other locations were also hit in the south and west of the country.

The latest hostilities come in a week that has seen the conflict expand, with the first publicly announced joint US-Saudi strikes targeting Iranian proxies in Iraq.

US military carries out fresh strikes on Iran | BBC News

Published

on

The US military said it has completed a “heavy wave” of strikes against Iran in retaliation for Tuesday’s attempted ballistic missile attacks on American forces.

Iran has responded by continuing attacks across the region. Jordan said it shot down five Iranian missiles, while Kuwait reports one person was killed in an Iranian strike.

The conflict is now pulling in more countries. This week saw the first publicly announced joint US-Saudi strikes against Iranian proxies in Iraq. Egypt has also blamed a drone attack for a fire on two ships, marking the first time it has been targeted since the war began five months ago.

With more countries being drawn in and diplomacy struggling to gain traction, are fears of a wider regional war becoming reality?

On the Iran War Today, we bring you up to date with everything you need to know about the conflict and what might come next.

Why Canada is standing up to Trump | The Global Story

Published

on

President Trump has announced a new round of tariffs against a range of Canadian goods, including hockey sticks and cement.

Trump says the tariffs are in retaliation for what he called Canada’s “unequal treatment” of US cars, dairy and alcohol.

But earlier in the week he also threatened retaliatory tariffs over Canada’s wildfire smoke which has been drifting into US cities.

Asma Khalid from The Global Story podcast speaks to Jayme Poisson – host of the CBC podcast ‘Frontburner’ – about what Trump actually wants from Canada, and whether Canadians are bracing for a world in which the US is no longer their closest ally.

Are holiday homes stopping young people buying houses? | BBC News

Published

What do affordable housing, arsonists, tourism, the Welsh language and council tax have in common?

The answer… second homes.

In some parts of Wales, second homes make up nearly a third of all properties. For local young people trying to buy their first home, that raises a big question – are second homes pricing them out of the communities they grew up in?

In this video, we explore the impact of second-home ownership on housing affordability, local culture and community life in Wales. We hear from residents, experts and policymakers to find out whether second homes are a problem, or whether there are other factors making it harder for young people to get on the housing ladder.

From economics and housing policy to tourism and the Welsh language, this is a story about far more than property.
