What’s life like inside Ukraine after four years of war? | The Global Story Podcast
This week marks four years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the largest and deadliest conflict in Europe since WW2.
The BBC’s international editor Jeremy Bowen, has been travelling through Ukraine speaking to people living on the front line, to soldiers, and to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.
Ukraine has put its official losses at 55,000 soldiers, and the BBC has verified the deaths of more than 180,000 on the Russian side, although the true toll is likely to be much higher. Tens of thousands of civilians have been killed or wounded, and millions have been displaced.
In this episode of The Global Story, Jeremy Bowen speaks to Asma Khalid from a hotel room in the centre of Ukraine’s capital city, Kyiv.
New episodes of The Global Story are released daily. If you’re in the UK, listen on BBC Sounds. If you live outside the UK, listen on BBC.com or wherever you get your podcasts.

A £3.6bn proposal to stop sewage being discharged into Windermere, England’s largest lake, has been unveiled.
The plans, which are backed by the local water company United Utilities and clean water campaigners, would see a tunnel up to 12 miles (19km) long built to transport sewage away from the lake.
At the moment both raw sewage and treated effluent are discharged into Windermere and campaigners say that is why parts of the lake have been turning green each summer, so-called algal blooming.
It is now up to the government to decide if the plan can be further developed, and if the £3.6bn price-tag is acceptable.

Israel’s election is taking place next Tuesday, to elect a new government, in the first election since the 7 October Hamas attacks three years ago.
More than half a million first-time voters are among those due to cast their ballots.
The vote is seen by many voters as an existential decision on the country’s future identity and security.
Surveys suggest that around three quarters of new voters see themselves as “right or centre right” – and that Israel’s far-right parties are among those benefitting.
The BBC’s Middle East Correspondent Lucy Williamson has been speaking with Gen Z voters in Israel.
