Published

on

The fallout from US President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs continues.

Last year he laid sweeping levies on dozens of countries. But in the last few days, they were struck down by the US Supreme Court. And President Trump responded with new tariffs.

So what does this mean for the future of global trade? How are leaders in Britain, the European Union and Canada adjusting to an ever-changing trade landscape? And what does it all mean for America’s rival superpower, China?

We speak to the BBC’s economics editor Faisal Islam.

What British teenagers really think about their futures | BBC News

Published

on

Hundreds of teenagers have told the BBC about their fears for the future and that they want more guidance from school on how to get a job.

A survey for the BBC asked 2,000 young people, all aged 13 to 18, about the world of work – and what help they need to secure employment once they leave full-time education.

Some called for more work experience at school and opportunities to improve their communication skills.

They also highlighted concerns about stress management, personal finances and how to apply for jobs.

In England, the government has an ambition to guarantee two weeks of work experience for every young person. However, this opportunity is not available to all teenagers, with more than half of those surveyed telling us they had not done any.

As part of the Teen Summit project by Radio 5 Live and BBC Bitesize, we followed four students from Newcastle – Param, McKenzie, Jasmine and Javaris – as they tried out roles for the first time as part of their work experience placements.

Indian opposition leaders march to top court to demand election chief resign | BBC News

Published

on

Thousands of opposition supporters marched through Delhi to India’s Supreme Court to demand the election chief resign over alleged electoral roll fraud.

Monday’s “March for Democracy” was the latest in a series of demonstrations, with thousands of security forces deployed and roads barricaded in the capital. Thousands of protesters were detained over the weekend.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi submitted a petition to the court challenging the process, in which tens of millions of names have been struck off the voter rolls.

Opposition parties allege the revision benefits Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Election Commission and the BJP reject the charge.
