The Legend of Sleepy Hollow 🎃 Washington Irving | Full Halloween Audiobook

Published

on

🎃 The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving – the full, unabridged audiobook of America’s most famous Halloween ghost story. First published in 1820, it gave the world the Headless Horseman and remains one of the classic tales to hear on an autumn night.

In a drowsy Dutch valley on the Hudson, where the air itself seems full of spells, the people still whisper about a Hessian trooper who lost his head to a cannonball and rides out each night in search of it. Into this haunted place comes Ichabod Crane, a lanky, superstitious schoolmaster with an appetite for good food, ghost stories and the hand of the lovely heiress Katrina Van Tassel. But he has a rival in the boisterous Brom Bones, and the road home from the Van Tassels’ autumn party runs straight past the old church bridge…

🎧 Perfect for a cozy Halloween night, relaxing, commuting, working, gaming or falling asleep to a classic ghost story.

Remember the Angel | Maud West | Abandoned in Shropshire 1900

Published

on

Maud West, London’s Lady Detective, returns in “Remember the Angel,” a classic British detective series set in 1930s England. In the autumn of 1900, two small boys were left on a church step in the Shropshire hills with their names pinned to their coats and nothing else. Thirty-two years later, they ask Maud to find out who left them.

This is a complete story, and you don’t need to have seen the earlier episodes to follow it.
If you missed any episodes click here all episodes: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLy2X_0QsRHwBnsRRqePBSrrMSMF1Pn_0E

April 1933. Inspector Flynn and his brother Jimmy go out for a quiet pint on the first of April and come home as Maud’s clients. All they have is a scrap of linen with a name worked on it in blue thread, and Flynn’s memory of a stone angel with a broken wing. The trail runs from a children’s home in a Shropshire village to the newspaper library at Colindale and the registers at Somerset House. Someone has been paying to keep this case cold for thirty-two years. Miss Pryce takes on the records, Jimmy reads a hand nobody else can, and Maud learns what it means to take a case for her own family.

A full-length 1930s British detective drama: about seventy minutes, in eleven acts.

THE RECORDS IN THE STORY
From 1837, every birth, marriage and death in England and Wales was registered, and the national indexes were kept at Somerset House in the Strand, where anyone could search them for a fee. The British Museum’s newspaper library at Colindale, in north London, opened its reading room in 1932. Wenmoor, Clunford, St Michael’s Cottage Homes, Highfold and everyone in this story are invented.

The 1929 Crash: Five Days That Broke Wall Street

Published

on

The 1929 Crash. Black Thursday, half past one: Richard Whitney walks onto the Stock Exchange floor and bids 205 for U.S. Steel, fifteen dollars above the market. On purpose. It worked, for one day. Of the five days that broke Wall Street, the one that did it isn’t the one with the famous name. And the man who bid 205 would end up in Sing Sing.

New York, October 1929, told on one strip of ticker tape. A country buying stocks on borrowed money. A ticker running about four hours late. The heads of the biggest banks meeting at noon at 23 Wall Street. A calm Friday and Saturday, and a President who said business was “on a sound and prosperous basis.” Then a Sunday with no trading, the margin calls, and two days that took the Dow down nearly a quarter. Nine years later, the SEC opened the books of Black Thursday’s hero. Booms, Busts & Swindles, Episode 13.

History and storytelling only, not financial advice. Narration uses a synthetic (text-to-speech) voice. No AI-generated scenes. The bankers’ support of 24 October 1929 is told as newspapers of the time reported it; no source says it was improper. Richard Whitney’s crime came later and was separate: in 1938 he pleaded guilty to grand larceny for taking securities he held in trust (SEC report, S10).
