The UK Prime Minister faces a call to resign, but can he rally MPs and keep his job? | BBC Newscast

Published

on

Keir Starmer has addressed his MPs and seems to have rallied some support after Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar called for him to quit.

In a press conference in Glasgow, Sarwar emphasised his concerns for Scotland ahead of the May elections, and told reporters “the leadership in Downing Street has to change”.

The move prompted statements supporting the prime minister from cabinet ministers and other key labour figures including potential rivals Angela Rayner and Wes Streeting.

The PM has been facing mounting pressure in recent days with two of his top aides Tim Allen and Morgan McSweeney resigning following the aftermath of revelations about the appointment of former US ambassador Peter Mandelson.

James and Alex are in for Adam to talk through what it all mean.

Earl Spencer: “I’m telling the truth”

Published

on

Contains flashing images – In this UK exclusive, Laura Kuenssberg interviews Earl Spencer after explosive new revelations in his latest book about his sister, Diana, Princess of Wales, her marriage to the now King, her tragic death, and the lasting impact on her children, Princes William and Harry.

This week, a Buckingham Palace Spokesperson said: “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss.”

Why Is Diana’s Brother Making Claims About The King Now? | BBC Newscast

Published

on

Laura has interviewed Princess Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, who has defended his claims about a phone call with King Charles.

He says the then-Prince of Wales said “we’ll forget her soon enough” during an argument over whether Princes William and Harry should walk in Diana’s funeral procession.

The Palace released a statement questioning his version of events, saying “grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory.”

So, what does the Earl Spencer say to that? And has this row become about integrity, and the right to tell Princess Diana’s story?

Scientists discover why Kent meningitis strain was so severe | BBC News

Published

on

Scientists say they have discovered why the bacteria responsible for the UK’s worst outbreak of meningitis B in Kent earlier this year proved so dangerous.

More than 20 young people, mostly students, were infected in the March outbreak, linked to a Canterbury nightclub. All needed hospital treatment, while nine ended up in intensive care and two died.

Experts at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the University of Oxford, who have looked at the DNA of the bacterium, say it picked up some genetic material from other bugs found naturally in the throats of some people.

This exchange created a new strain or variant that then spread between clubbers and caused severe illness.
