Ghislaine Maxwell refuses to answer questions about Epstein in congressional hearing | BBC News
Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted associate of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, refused to answer questions from the US House Oversight Committee on Monday.
Maxwell appeared virtually for a closed-door deposition from the Texas prison where she is serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking.
Republican House Oversight Committee chairman James Comer said that “as expected”, Maxwell pleaded the Fifth Amendment, invoking her right to remain silent.
Democratic Representative Melanie Stansbury told reporters after the hearing that Maxwell used the opportunity to “campaign for clemency”.

Official data shows police forces across England and Wales, excluding the British Transport Police, recorded 502,011 shoplifting offences in 2025-26 alone.
More than half of those investigations were closed with no suspect identified.
The government said it is exploring other avenues of tackling prolific shoplifting, in addition to prison sentences and drug treatment, such as technology or court orders preventing them from visiting certain shops or areas.

Earl Spencer, the brother of Diana Princess of Wales, has told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg that he stands by his claims that King Charles, in the days after her death, said “rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough”.
A Buckingham Palace Spokesperson said: “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss.”

US President Donald Trump has warned Iran it could face “annihilation” without a US deal over the ongoing conflict, although he said he believed an agreement would be made after US mid-term elections in November.
Trump said UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham is a man he can do business with as they met for the first time in New York.
But he criticised the UK’s plan to hand sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius – the islands which are home to a joint US-UK military base.
Trump also met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines.
