Migrant crisis: Government reopens Campsfield immigration detention centre
The Government has reopened the Campsfield immigration detention facility near Oxford as part of plans to boost spaces to house asylum seekers and foreign offenders while they wait to be deported.
It comes as Sir Keir Starmer’s Government is seeking to tackle the backlog of asylum cases and speed up removals.
Campsfield has an additional 160 beds after the first phase of refurbishment, with plans for that to later rise to 400.
Speaking exclusively to GB News,Minister for Border Security and Asylum, Alex Norris said: “We are making it unmistakeably clear that illegal migrants who break our laws will not remain in the UK. Opening Campsfield IRC will allow us to scale up our enforced returns activity and remove thousands more foreign criminals quickly.
“We have taken control of a system in chaos with the highest level of returns and deportations for nearly a decade. This expansion will help us continue on that trajectory – more bedspaces, more capacity, more removals.
“This is delivery in action. We are unapologetic about doing whatever it takes to enforce our borders, uphold the law, and keep our country safe”.
