Coronavirus crisis “to worsen” with 9,000 people now in hospital in England – BBC News
There are now 9,000 patients with coronavirus in hospitals across England. A quarter of doctors are ill or self isolating. The new Nightingale Hospital in east London will begin taking its first 500 patients this week and will soon have room for 4,000. The government’s chief scientific adviser says the number of infections and deaths will continue to rise over the next two to three weeks. NATO boosts forces in Europe to counter “direct threat” from Russia – BBC News
Leaders of the NATO military alliance have declared that Russia is a direct threat to their security.
They have said that Ukraine can count on NATO support for “as long as it takes”.
The statements came at a summit meeting of leaders of the alliance in Madrid.
It marks a toughening of NATO’s stance following Russian’s invasion of Ukraine.
NATO has also agreed to accept Sweden and Finland’s application to join the alliance’s current 30 member nations.
The United States has committed to send more military forces to Europe. President Biden said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had “shattered the peace” that previously existed in Europe.

Violent scenes as fans invade Manchester United stadium in protest at US owners – BBC News
There have been violent and chaotic scenes at Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium as fans invaded the pitch to protest against the club’s American owners.
It led to one of the Premier League’s biggest games of the season, against Liverpool, being called off.
Outside the ground supporters faced off against the police. Two officers were injured.
The fans accuse the Glazer family who bought the club in 2005 of piling up huge debts. They’re also angry at the attempt of the owners to form and join a new breakaway European Super League.

UK threat level raised to “Severe” following “Islamist” attack by gunman in Vienna – BBC News
14 people have been arrested in connection with a series of shootings in the Austrian capital Vienna that left four people dead.
22 others were injured when a gunman, described as an “Islamist terrorist” by the authorities, fired into crowds of people at six different locations.
In the UK the security threat level has been raised from ‘substantial’ to ‘severe’ which means an attack is thought to be highly likely.
