Iran crisis deepens – protests spread with chants of “death to the dictator” | BBC News

Published

on

Mass protests and strikes in Iran over inflation and currency devaluation have spread from the capital, Tehran, to several other cities on a third day of unrest.

The protests began when shopkeepers in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar staged a strike after the Iranian rial hit a record low against the US dollar. Iran is facing a deepening economic, fuelled by international sanctions and inflation has been rising sharply.

Videos verified by BBC Persian have shown demonstrations in the cities of Karaj, Hamedan, Qeshm, Malard, Isfahan, Kermanshah, Shiraz and Yazd. University students have joined the protests, chanting anti-government slogans including “death to the dictator” – a reference to the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who holds ultimate power in Iran. Security forces have been using tear gas in an attempt to disperse the protesters.

The Iranian government said it “recognises the protests” and would listen “with patience, even if it is confronted with harsh voices”. President Masoud Pezeshkian wrote on X late on Monday that he had instructed the interior minister to hold talks with what he described as “representatives” of the protesters so that measures could be taken “to resolve the problems and act responsibly”.

Some protesters have been chanting slogans in support of the son of the late Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was overthrown in the 1979 Islamic Revolution, including “Long live the Shah”.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Parham Ghobadi of the BBC Persian Service.

Published

on

US President Donald Trump has asked Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) boss Dana White to be White House press secretary, in a social media post.

“Dana will be a Press Secretary like none other,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Dana, please take the job!”

It’s unclear whether the president’s public job offer is genuine. The BBC has asked the White House and UFC, along with its parent company TKO Group Holdings, for comment.

The vacancy for White House press secretary has been open since mid-October, when Katie Zacharia exited after just a few days on the job.

How the Democrats’ historic night of wins unfolded | BBC News

Published

on

The Democrats have won a blowout victory in the US midterm elections, winning the Senate and the House of Representatives, taking control of Congress for the rest of Donald Trump’s presidency.

In the Senate race, Republican strongholds have been toppled by the Democrats in Texas, Ohio and Kansas, which last elected a Democrat almost 100 years ago.

Trump has congratulated the Democrats on a “good job” and acknowledged that gas prices hurt Republicans during the midterm races, saying people “didn’t like it” when they had to pay more for fuel.

The midterm elections happen mid-way through every 4-year presidential election cycle, giving Americans the chance to elect members of Congress, which is made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Here is how the night unfolded.
