US seizes second oil tanker off Venezuela’s coast | BBC News

Published

on

The US has seized an oil tanker that had recently departed from Venezuela, according to the US Department of Homeland Security.

It is the second time this month that an oil-carrying ship has been seized off the country’s coast.

The move comes after President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he was ordering a “blockade” of sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela.

Venezuela has described the latest US move as “theft and kidnapping”. It has previously accused the Trump administration of trying to steal its resources.

Why is the UK telling people to stockpile? | BBC News

Published

on

Major retailers have reported a big rise in sales of tinned food, bottled water, wind up radios and batteries, after the government launched its ‘be ready’ campaign.

The government is urging people to stock up on enough for three days in case of a crisis – like extreme weather or a cyber-attack.

The security minister’s defended the campaign, arguing that our European neighbours seem better prepared.

Luxury cruise passengers stranded after fuel costs surge | BBC News

Published

on

Passengers of the Villa Vie Odyssey boarded the luxury cruise ship expecting a voyage around the world spanning over three years, visiting over 150 countries and making memories to last a lifetime.

On Tuesday, however, just 750 days into its circumnavigation, the boat suspended operations due to extraordinarily high fuel costs, leaving passengers stranded in Cambodia.

The US-based operator has said it is working with passengers on disembarkation plans and “temporary living arrangements”.

Global fuel prices have soared since the Iran war started earlier this year. The ship’s operator said the monthly fuel cost per cabin in parts of Asia has risen to as much as $8,000 (£6,000) from $1,800.

It is unclear how many residents were on board but the nearly 200m (656ft) vessel can carry up to 650 passengers.

Passengers Lanette Canen and Johan Bodin told the BBC they were informed by staff at 6am on Tuesday that they had to leave by 2pm on the same day.

“There have been a lot of hugs and tears as residents support one another and process what has happened” the couple said.

Why are so many people taking their lives in prison? – BBC Newsnight

Published

on

BBC Newsnight reports on the alarming levels of prisoners taking their own lives and hear from the mothers who lost children to a prison process that failed them. Please subscribe HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUog

Prison suicides are barely mentioned – outside the sensational ones that grab the headlines.

But over the last ten years there has been a dramatic rise in prisoners taking their own lives – up 220 percent. A death in prison can leave victims of crime, as well as families, desperate to understand what went wrong.

Newsnight goes behind bars to try and understand the part of the system that isn’t working. We discover a world in which mental health is treated too often with custodial sentencing, in which officers are promised training they never receive, and a world in which checks, that have never been made on prisoners, are recorded and falsified.

We speak to families who presumed their loved ones would serve short sentences in relative safety – only to find they would never return home.

Newsnight’s Richard Watson reports.
