Susie Wiles is widely credited as being the mastermind behind Donald Trump’s successful presidential campaign last year. The White House Chief of Staff, referred to by the president as the “most powerful woman in the world”, is the gatekeeper to the Oval Office and a crucial figure in delivering Trump’s national agenda.
She also rarely speaks to the media, making her an elusive figure in the president’s top team despite her significant influence. But in a series of interviews for Vanity Fair, she refers to Donald Trump as having an “alcoholic’s personality”, describes JD Vance as a “conspiracy theorist” and Elon Musk as an “odd, odd duck”. The White House has described the articles as a “framed hit piece” and accused Vanity Fair of taking statements out of context.
In today’s podcast, Justin and Anthony go through some of the most revealing lines from the interviews, and speak to the journalist who sat down with Susie Wiles – Chris Whipple – to find out why he thinks Wiles wanted to speak with him, and how he responds to White House criticism of the interviews.

Russia blames sabotage for new Crimea blasts – BBC News
A week after an apparent Ukrainian attack on a Russian military base in occupied Crimea, an arms store at another military facility has been hit by a series of explosions.
Blaming “sabotage”, Russian officials said a fire triggered the blasts in the Dzhankoi area, another fire hit a power station and a railway was damaged.
A string of blasts last week destroyed Russian warplanes at a Black Sea base on the Crimean coast.
Ukraine has not admitted that attack.

Rush to book summer breaks in Europe after deal to lift travel restrictions – BBC News
Travel firms are seeing a huge rush to book summer holidays after a new deal means restrictions on travel to many countries in Europe will be lifted from July 6th.
A new “traffic light” system will set risk levels for individual countries – with a “Green” rating allowing unrestricted travel. Many destinations including France, Spain, Italy, Greece and Turkey are likely to be open to British tourists.
It means that holidaymakers will be able to return to the UK without having to self-isolate for 14 days. The Foreign Office will also lift its advice against ‘all but essential travel’ to low or medium-risk destinations, making it possible to obtain travel insurance.
However the continued easing of restrictions will depend on the UK maintaining a low level of coronavirus infections, in order for other countries to accept British tourists.
Kate Silverton presents BBC News reporting by Transport Correspondent Tom Burridge.
