The more than three decade old ‘Drumcree conflict’ reignited in Northern Ireland over the weekend after the Protestant Orange Order was granted permission to march down the largely Catholic Garvaghy Road in Portadown. Local Catholic and nationalist residents filled the streets to block the parade, and had the support of the likes of Sinn Féin. But this local dispute is really a national one with deeply-rooted divisions. It could have major political implications too, as the Democratic Unionist Party has accused First Minister Michelle O’Neill of breaking the law by supporting the protest, leaving Northern Ireland’s already fragile power-sharing government on the brink.
