Today, the number of people in hospital with the flu has risen by more than half this week.

Doctors say an earlier start to the flu season plus an unexpected mutation in this years primary strain has led to a lower rate of immunity amongst the general public for this time of year.

BBC health editor Hugh Pym and Dr Jamie Lopez Bernal, consultant epidemiologist from the UK Health Security Agency breakdown the data.

Plus, US forces have seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela in an escalation of the US government’s pressure campaign against Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro.

The news came as Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado collected her Nobel Peace Prize in Norway, appearing despite a travel ban and a threat from the Venezuelan government that she would be labelled as a fugitive

The US and Iran have launched new strikes against one another throughout this week.

Meanwhile, the coffin of Ali Khamenei, Iran’s former supreme leader killed by Israel in February, has been on a procession tour this week of holy sites in Iraq and Iran.

Huge crowds gathered wherever it went, the coffin was passed over a sea of hands, and three of Khamenei’s sons wept over the coffin in Tehran.

US President Donald Trump says he’s “number one on the kill list for Iran”.

The peace between the US and Iran is fragile, at best. At worst, it could be over.

We speak to Parham Ghobadi, from the BBC’s Persian Service.

Drug smuggler admits most of his cannabis couriers get caught | BBC News

Drugs gangs are flooding the north of England with cheap cannabis grown overseas and sold to mimic slickly marketed, legal marijuana from the United States, a BBC investigation has learned.

A thriving black market for “Cali weed” – high-potency strains originally cultivated in licensed dispensaries in California – has prompted an unprecedented wave of smuggling from dealers growing it in countries including Thailand.

One dealer boasted he made massive profits importing cannabis and described how he sent drug couriers from Thailand to the UK, even though he knew “most will get caught”.

Full interview with Count Binface ahead of Clacton by-election | BBC News

After the announcement that Reform UK leader Nigel Farage would quit his Clacton constituency and stand in a by-election, the serial election candidate Count Binface posted online: “Game on, Nige.”

Jonathan Harvey, the man who dresses as a bin, spoke to BBC Breakfast.

He is one of few people saying he will run against Farage in the contest after Labour, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats all said they would not field candidates.
