ILLEGAL WRAPS! Antonio Margarito vs Shane Mosley | Full Fight | WBA Welterweight Title | 24/1/2009

Published

on

Antonio Margarito vs. Shane Mosley, billed as It’s On, was a professional boxing match contested on January 24, 2009, for the WBA and vacant Lineal welterweight championship.

Following his upset victory over WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto in July 2008, Antonio Margarito’s promoter Top Rank were planning for a summer rematch with a potential interim fight in between. In autumn 2008 a deal was agreed with Golden Boy Promotions for Margarito to face former 3 weight champion Shane Mosley on 24 January 2009, with $2 million for each man on the table.

At the 9 December press conference, Margarito told the reporters “I have being looking for the biggest fights for a long time, and this one against Mosley is one of them. As I proved with Miguel Cotto, I have never ducked anyone in my career and I’m looking forward to showing the fans again why I am the best welterweight in the world. I fear no one. This fight will be my moment to shine and I will not let it pass by.” Mosley meanwhile said “I’m glad Margarito decided to step up to the plate and fight me. If Margarito thinks he is the bigger puncher than I, he is delusional. I will definitely win this fight, especially with the type of fighter he is. He is going to end up getting knocked out because he’ll come right at me and I’ll catch him.”

Mosley’s build up to the bout had been hit by multiple issues, firstly he had fired his father as his trainer (for the second time), he was still dealing with the legal issues surrounding his involvement in the BALCO scandal and he had separated with his wife (and now former manager) Jin.

Mosley, was a 4–1 underdog with the bookies.

Shortley before the bout, Mosley’s trainer, Naazim Richardson, observed that Margarito had a pasty white substance in his handwraps. One doctor described this material as plaster hidden in the wrapped hands of Margarito, leading to accusations that he may have been trying to cheat.

At Richardson’s insistence, California State Inspector Dean Lohuis called for Margarito’s hands to be rewrapped. According to Judd Burstein, the attorney for Mosley, Margarito had wet pads in the wrapping. Mosley’s doctor, Robert Olvera, likened the material to the type of plaster used to make casts. Burstein said he seized the pad removed from the wrapping and another pad found in Margarito’s dressing room. Both were placed in a sealed box that was given to Lohuis for further study.
The California Department of Justice laboratory later confirmed the substance to be similar in nature to plaster of Paris.

😱HUGE UPSET #OnThisDay as Hearns faces Barkley in Vegas | FULL FIGHT | WBC Middleweight Title

Published

on

Thomas Hearns vs. Iran Barkley, billed as Knockout Nite, was a professional boxing match contested on June 6, 1988, for the WBC middleweight title. It is widely regarded as one of the biggest upsets in boxing history, and one of the most unexpected endings to a fight.

In his previous fight on October 29, 1987, Thomas Hearns had captured the middleweight title after knocking out Juan Roldán becoming the first four-division world champion in boxing history.

Then on March 6, 1988, Iran Barkley beat Michael Olajide by technical knockout, becoming a top contender to WBC middleweight champion Thomas Hearns in the process. Two weeks after Barkley’s victory, the fight between Hearns and Barkley became official. Having had only one title fight before his fight with Hearns, Barkley came into the fight as a 4–1 underdog.

🥊 Fight For 𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐏𝐔𝐓𝐄𝐃 👑 | Devin Haney vs George Kambosos Jr | FULL FIGHT | 5/6/2022 #OnThisDay

Published

on

George Kambosos Jr. 20–0 (10 KO) vs. Devin Haney 27–0 (15 KO), billed as Undisputed, was a professional boxing match contested on 5 June 2022, for the undisputed lightweight championship.

After defeating Vasiliy Lomachenko in October 2020, Teófimo López claimed to have become the undisputed champion in the lightweight division. However, many boxing purists rejected López’s claim, believing Devin Haney had the legitimate WBC lightweight title, meaning that there was still not an undisputed lightweight champion. Haney called out López for a bout to end the debate, which did not materialise. Haney was set to be ordered to face fellow American lightweight Ryan Garcia, which Garcia dismissed, instead advocating for a bout with Gervonta Davis. Haney then agreed to a title defence against Jorge Linares, winning by unanimous decision.

Meanwhile, López was forced to a mandatory defence against Australian George Kambosos Jr, which was originally set for 5 June in Miami, Florida, before being moved to 19 June. López then tested positive for COVID-19, and after multiple setbacks, the fight was finally set for 27 November in New York City, New York. In one of the biggest upsets of 2021, Kambosos Jr defeated López via split decision, winning the unified lightweight titles in the process.

On 15 October, Ryan Garcia was forced to pull out of his bout with Joseph Diaz, and Devin Haney agreed to step in and face Diaz on 5 December in Las Vegas, Nevada, with Haney winning by unanimous decision. Haney then called out Kambosos Jr, who had defeated López the week before, to determine an undisputed lightweight champion. However, there was another man in the lightweight division looking for Kambosos Jr’s titles: Vasiliy Lomachenko, who defeated Richard Commey on 11 December in New York. A potential bout with Lomachenko seemed more likely for Kambosos Jr, as a two-fight deal was agreed without any problems on 15 February 2022. However, on 24 February, Russia invaded Lomachenko’s country of Ukraine, with Lomachenko heading over to Ukraine in order to defend his country, as well as unified heavyweight champion and fellow Ukrainian, Oleksandr Usyk.

On 20 March, Lomachenko was given permission to leave Ukraine in order to start training for a potential bout with Kambosos Jr. However, Lomachenko declined, opting to stay and fight for his country. This resulted in Kambosos Jr–Haney talks advancing, and on 27 March, the pair struck a deal, which included Haney signing a two-fight deal with Top Rank and Lou DiBella to fight exclusively on ESPN platforms.

The deal includes a rematch clause if Haney wins, with the rematch also taking place in Australia. Even if Haney lost, his next bout afterward would be co-promoted by Top Rank and DiBella.

❌Ref OVERRULES Corner in CRAZY FIGHT‼️ | Miguel Cotto vs Yuri Foreman | WBA Light-Middleweight 🥇

Published

on

Miguel Cotto vs. Yuri Foreman, billed as Stadium Slugfest, was a boxing super welterweight fight for the WBA Super Welterweight championship. The bout was held on June 5, 2010, at Yankee Stadium, in New York City, United States. Cotto won the fight via technical knockout in the ninth round.

Cotto, a three time world champion, was coming from a TKO loss at Welterweight to Manny Pacquiao. After the fight the Puerto Rican moved up to the Junior Middleweight division to challenge Foreman for his WBA title. At the other side, the Israeli fighter was coming from a win against Daniel Santos.

The fight also showcased the return of boxing to The Bronx. It was the first big match in the area since September 1976, when Muhammad Ali outpointed Ken Norton in the first Yankee Stadium.

Immediately after the fight against Joshua Clottey, negotiations began to pursue a contest against Manny Pacquiao. Even before Pacquiao defeated Ricky Hatton, Bob Arum, who represents both Cotto and Pacquiao, stated that he was interested in this matchup. Subsequently, Pacquiao expressed interest in fighting Cotto. The fight was sanctioned as a world title fight in the welterweight division, where the weight limit is 147 pounds, however Cotto’s camp agreed to fight at a catchweight of 145 pounds to accommodate Pacquiao’s smaller physique. Cotto’s camp also conceded the larger share of the purse to Pacquiao, who received a 65% share of pay-per-view buys, compared to Cotto’s 35% share.

On November 14, 2009, Pacquiao defeated Cotto by TKO 55 seconds into the 12th round, dethroning Cotto as a WBO welterweight champion. The fight generated 1.25 million buys and 70 million dollars in domestic pay-per-view revenue, making it the most watched boxing event of 2009. Pacquiao earned around 22 million dollars for his part in the fight, whilst Cotto earned around 12 million dollars. Pacquiao-Cotto also generated a live gate of $8,847,550 from an official crowd of 15,930.

On November 14, 2009, Foreman defeated Daniel Santos by a 12-round unanimous decision to become the new WBA super welterweight champion and Israel’s first WBA champion. He also became Israel’s second world boxing champion, following about a month after Hagar Finer won the Women’s International Boxing Federation bantamweight world championship.

In early January 2010, Foreman began talks with Bob Arum to arrange for himself and Filipino boxer seven-division world champion Manny Pacquiao, to meet on March 13, 2010. However, Pacquiao rejected the offer.
