A MATTER OF PRIDE! Kostya Tszyu vs Julio Cesar Chavez | Full Fight | Showtime | 7/29/2000

Published

Kostya Tszyu vs. Julio César Chávez, billed as A Matter of Pride, was a professional boxing match contested on July 29, 2000, for the WBC super lightweight title.

In June 2000, it was announced that reigning WBC super lightweight champion would make the next defense of his title the following month in Phoenix, Arizona against former 2-time super lightweight champion Julio César Chávez. The announcement was met with controversy as it was felt that the soon-to-be-38-year old Chávez, who the WBC had ranked as their number-one super lightweight contender and, as such, Tszyu’s mandatory challenger, was severely outmatched by Tszyu, who was 8 years younger and in the prime of his professional career. Jay Larkin, vice president of Showtime’s sports programming and executive producer of Showtime Championship Boxing openly acknowledged that he was “not at all happy” about the fight being made and offered his opinion that he “did not think Chávez should be the No. 1 contender.”[2] Furthermore, then-Arizona senator John McCain, a noted detractor of combat sports, wrote a letter to Arizona governor Jane Dee Hull in which he called the fight “an illegitimate and potentially dangerous mismatch” in a failed attempt to have the fight cancelled.

In order to get approved for the fight, Chávez had to submit the results of a medical exam and plead his case in person to the Arizona Boxing Commission. After 90-minute hearing in which Chávez pleaded to the committee to let him “go out with dignity and honor”, the commission granted him a boxing license to fight in the state, officially putting the fight on. Entering the fight, Chávez was such a heavy underdog that Las Vegas casinos refused to post odds for the fight.

George Foreman vs Tommy Morrison | FIGHT HIGHLIGHTS | Heavyweight Boxing

Published

on

George Foreman 72–3 (67 KO) vs. Tommy Morrison 36–1 (32 KO), billed as the Star-Spangled Battle, was a professional boxing match contested between George Foreman and Tommy Morrison on June 7, 1993, for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) Heavyweight Championship.

After WBO Heavyweight champion Michael Moorer opted to vacate the title in February 1993, the WBO sanctioned a match between popular 44-year-old ex-WBC and WBA heavyweight champion George Foreman and then up-and-coming 24-year-old prospect Tommy Morrison to determine who would be the next WBO Heavyweight champion.

Both fighters were looking to claim the title after losing their previous heavyweight title fights. Foreman had come up short to Evander Holyfield in a bid to become the oldest Undisputed Heavyweight champion two years prior, while Morrison had unsuccessfully challenged fellow undefeated contender Ray Mercer for the WBO title, in what was his first (and at the time of his fight with Foreman, only) professional loss.

Prior to the fight, Foreman announced that his fight with Morrison would “probably (be) the last fight I’ll ever have” while adding that he wanted to go out “right” by getting a “title belt around my waist”.

Foreman was a 7-to-5 favorite to win.

🥊GRUELLING FIGHT🩸 | Shane Mosley vs Ricardo Mayorga | FULL FIGHT |

Published

on

Shane Mosley 44–5 (1) (37 KO) vs. Ricardo Mayorga 28–6–1 (1) (22 KO) was a professional boxing match contested on September 27, 2008, for the vacant WBA Inter-Continental light middleweight title.

Negotiations for a Shane Mosley–Ricardo Mayorga fight began in mid-June 2008 after a planned Mosley vs. Sergio Mora WBC light middleweight title fight fell through days earlier.

Mora had upset previous light middleweight champion Vernon Forrest a week earlier after which he entered into negotiations to face Mosley in his first defense, but Forrest had a rematch clause in his contract and demanded an immediate rematch from Mora, threatening legal action should he face another opponent, resulting in Mora and Mosley ending their negotiations and Mosley instead pivoting to Mayorga.

In August, the Mosley–Mayorga fight was announced at a press conference held at The Biltmore Los Angeles at which Mayorga vowed to knock Mosley out within the first three rounds.
