on

President Biden has defended the US withdrawal from Afghanistan as thousands of desperate people try to flee the country following the Taliban seizure of power.

There have been tragic scenes of panic and mayhem at Kabul airport as Afghans tried to board departing aircraft, some clinging to planes as they took off.

US and British troops are working to evacuate their citizens but the fate of many Afghans who have worked for the former government and coalition forces is unclear.

Reeta Chakrabarti presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Secunder Kermani, Malik Mudassir in Kabul, north America editor Jon Sopel and chief international correspondent Lyse Doucet.

Zelensky says US intelligence sharing ‘works now’ after talks with Trump envoy | BBC News

Published

on

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has said US intelligence sharing on deadly Russian missile attacks “works now” after talks with US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff.

The meeting in Oslo came after accusations by Kyiv that Washington was withholding key intelligence – a claim rejected as “scandalous” by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb, who also took part in the talks, said “genuine progress” was made on proposals to achieve peace but gave no details and warned that patience would be needed.

Relations between Ukraine and the US have soured in recent weeks to the extent that Trump has said it is time for Ukraine to get a new president, and most recently “for somebody else to negotiate on behalf of Ukraine”.

Laura, Paddy, and Joe Pike look at how it would work and how much it would cost.

They also talk through other interesting things to come out of the conversation, including Burnham’s refusal to commit to bringing the welfare bill down, and support for a third runway at Heathrow.
