Pink Was Never for Boys. The Myth Behind the Myth

Published

on

Go to the baby section of any store: one aisle pink, one aisle blue. You’ve probably heard the clever answer: pink used to be for boys, until the colours suddenly flipped.

Here’s the real story. Babies wore white for most of history. Pink and blue drifted in during the 1800s, and for decades nobody agreed which was which. Postwar , and later prenatal tests and big-ticket baby gear, picked one answer and sold it everywhere. And the famous “pink was for boys” flip? The evidence says it’s mostly a myth too.

What History Got WRONG About Viking Hygiene

Published

on

How clean were the Vikings, really? This animated look at Viking hygiene shows how they kept clean, from combs and ear spoons to Saturday baths and lye soap, and why the “filthy barbarian” is one of the biggest Viking myths in movies. It’s Viking history from everyday life, beyond the battlefield.

Follow Bjorn through one very clean week. Vikings carried combs made from reindeer antler shipped in from Norway, plus a pocket grooming kit with tweezers and a tiny spoon for ear wax. Saturday was literally “washing day,” the sagas mention steam baths, and many historians think lye soap was used to bleach hair and beards blond, which was also bad news for lice. Women were even buried with glass smoothers for ironing linen.

Then the less flattering side. An Arab traveler on the Volga watched a whole crew wash, spit and blow their noses into one shared basin and called them “the filthiest of God’s creatures.” A thousand-year-old poop found under a bank in York turned out to be full of worm eggs. And a 2023 study of Viking teeth found cavities in almost half the people, along with one molar drilled to let out an infection. No anesthetic.

So were the Vikings clean? Depends who’s holding the basin.

Some stories here come from sagas written down centuries later, and the video says so when it uses them.
