Inside Syria’s jail for IS suspects | BBC News
For more than five decades the Assad family ruled Syria until December 2024 when the regime collapsed.
In the security vacuum left behind, Islamic State fighters have regrouped, increasing their attacks in the Kurdish controlled northeast of the country.
The fall of the self-proclaimed IS caliphate more than six years ago left about 8,000 suspected fighters in prisons in Syria, including many Britons and more than 30,000 of their family members are still being held in camps there.
While some countries have repatriated their nationals, the UK has stripped many of their citizenship and so they remain in Syria.
Senior International correspondent Orla Guerin reports from the northeast of the country – where she gained access to the prison and camps holding some of the Britons who fled to join IS.

Is Israel collapsing a US-Iran deal over Lebanon? | BBC News
The US and Iran still need to work out several sticking points before an agreement on the war can be reached, Vice-President JD Vance has said.
Asked by the BBC if President Donald Trump was close to signing a deal, Vance said it was too early to say “when or if” the two sides would finalise an agreement.
Meanwhile, waves of Israeli strikes have hit southern Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah infrastructure, according to the Israeli military.
The escalation threatens to derail talks aimed at ending the war between the US and Israel on one side and Iran on the other.
Iran insists that any deal must also cover Lebanon. Israel says it reserves the right to continue to fight the threat from Hezbollah.
