‘Brothers in the forest’ – the fight to protect an isolated Amazon tribe | BBC News
A new report by the human rights organisation, Survival International, says there are at least 196 of what it calls “uncontacted groups” left in the world, external.
The Mashco Piro is believed to be the largest. The report says half of these groups could be wiped out in the next decade if governments don’t do more to protect them.
It claims the biggest risks are from logging, mining or drilling for oil.
Uncontacted groups are extremely vulnerable to basic disease – as such, the report says a threat is posed by contact with evangelical missionaries and social media influencers looking for clicks.

Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma says the gaming giant needs to be “thinking about” affordability for its next-generation console, amid a “crisis” in computing prices.
Speaking exclusively to the BBC’s Laura Cress at Gamescom in Cologne, she said rising hardware costs partly driven by AI spending mean firms need to find ways to make gaming affordable.
She also revealed gamers will soon be able to get digital versions of many of the physical games they currently own, potentially meaning their old games can be played on future Xbox consoles without having to put a disc in a drive.

A 23-year-old Utah man has pleaded not guilty to the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk – as a judge ruled prosecutors can seek the death penalty at trial.
Tyler Robinson denies aggravated murder, a capital offence in Utah, and six other charges in connection with the shooting of Kirk at a campus event on 10 September 2025.
Defence lawyers had tried to have the death penalty taken off the table, but prosecutors argued that aggravating factors, such as firing into a crowd in the presence of children, warranted a capital trial.
Turning Point USA co-founder Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem.

Hundreds of people have become ill with salmonella linked to imported eggs, say UK authorities, who say they have identified two new clusters of the infection.
Some of the cases date back a year, but all involve bacteria that are almost genetically identical, suggesting a common food source.

Apple has renamed Lake Ontario as Lake America on its Maps app, after an order from US President Donald Trump.
It’s all part of Washington’s trade row with Canada.
The change was made for US-based users – those in Canada will continue to see Lake Ontario displayed. The BBC has contacted Apple for comment.
