Nightmare in Blood
NIGHTMARE IN BLOOD is a unique vampire thriller that played across America in 1978 in theaters and drive-ins. It depicts a horror convention taking place in San Francisco (it was actually shot at the Fox Theater in Oakland, CA) with the guest star being a Hollywood actor named Malakai (Jerry Walter), who specializes in playing a blood-thirsty vampire character in all his films. A committee made up of a mystery writer (Dan Caldwell), a Sherlockian type of investigator (John Cochran), and a lovely fashion designer (Barrie Youngfellow) engage with Malakai and his two public relations men (Hy Pike and Ray K. Goman), unaware they are planning to murder many involved in the convention. Popping up mysteriously is a Jewish avenger (Irving Israel) revealing Malakai’s involvement in Hitler’s Holocaust. The true and historic identities of the Public Relations men are discovered by Cochran. Other unique personalities include a “Fright Flicks” TV host (Morgan Upton), a comic-book store owner ((Drew Eshelman) patterned after San Francisco’s real-life Gary Arlington, and an anti-comic book character (Justin Bishop), patterned after real-life Fredric Wertham. (Bishop’s character is named Dr. Unworth.) “Nightmare” was written amd produced by John Stanley and Kenn Davis. Stanley, who also directed, later became a horror host in the Bay Area hosting “Creature Features” for five years. He was also an entertainment writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, covering movie and TV personalities. An artist who also worked at the Chronicle, Davis also served as director of photography. Appearing in a cameo was Kerwin Mathews, famed for action fantasies. Barrie Youngfellow went on to star in more than 100 episodes of the TV series “It’s a Living.” Before its theatrical release, NIGHTMARE IN BLOOD” was shown at the Rex Theater, the largest theater in Paris, with director Dario Argento in attendance.
