Could Hamas recalling fighters threaten peace in Gaza? | BBC News

Published

on

Today, we look at the progress of the Trump peace plan for Israel and Gaza as Hamas recalls 7,000 fighters to reassert control over Gaza amid fears of renewed internal violence.

The Hamas mobilisation had been widely anticipated amid growing uncertainty about who will govern Gaza once the war ends.

The ceasefire appears to have held but Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners are yet to be released.

Laura and Paddy speak with international editor Jeremy Bowen about the latest.

Plus, Laura explains how the contest to become deputy leader of the Labour party could be seen as a verdict on Keir Starmer.

Jason Arday’s death ‘a tragedy on so many levels’, UK PM Andy Burnham says | BBC News

Published

on

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has described the death of former Cambridge professor Jason Arday as “a tragedy on so many levels”, as he called for a “moment for reflection”.

Arday was found dead at an address in Battersea, south London, on Friday afternoon.

The 41-year-old had resigned as a professor of sociology of education at the University of Cambridge last week, after allegations of plagiarism and questions about some of his achievements. He had denied the claims.

In a statement issued by his publisher, Arday’s family said a “campaign of misinformation” had been too much for him.

Published

on

The FBI thwarted a plot targeting Sunday’s UFC event at the White House and has arrested five men, the US justice department said on Tuesday.

Part of the plan involved striking nearby buildings with explosive-laden drones and firing on “high value targets”, prosecutors alleged.

One suspect was arrested in Ohio last week, where investigators reviewed encrypted messages involving other alleged conspirators. Prosecutors said in charging documents they had allegedly “expressed ultra-religious and antigovernment sentiments”.
