Israel and Hamas begin indirect talks in Egypt on Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan | BBC News

Published

on

Indirect talks between Israel and Hamas negotiators have begun in Sharm El-Sheikh, aimed at securing a ceasefire in Gaza.

This week’s negotiations will focus on the first phase of the Trump peace plan, which is to agree on the details of how to release the remaining Israeli hostages and exchange them for Palestinian prisoners.

Polls now consistently show that around 70% of Israelis really want this war to end in exchange for the release of the hostages.

They have become very vocal about it, especially the families of the hostages – organising rallies, issuing press releases, urging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to take this chance to bring their loved ones home.

Will Trump and Xi Jinping stop AI ‘killing us all’? | The Global Story

Published

on

China’s President Xi Jinping will meet Donald Trump later this month with the issue of AI governance high on the agenda.

In recent weeks there has been increasing concern around the risks that AI might pose to humanity, after a safety researcher at Anthropic suggested the technology could, “kill all humans” within the next decade.

Washington has long framed the United States’ development of AI as a race against China – one that it considers vital to its national security. But does China see it the same way? And if so, what are the chances of these rival superpowers cooperating to reign in the risks of AI?

The Global Story’s Asma Khalid is joined by Kyle Chan, a fellow at the Brookings Institute and an expert on Chinese tech development, to understand how China’s AI ambitions differ from the US, and what‘s really at stake if these two countries fail to find common ground on this era-defining technology.

Gaza building collapse kills at least 20 people, local rescue teams say | BBC News

Published

on

At least 20 people have been killed, including five children, and dozens are missing after a war-damaged building collapsed in the Gaza Strip, according to local rescue teams.

Video footage shows the search for bodies and survivors continuing in the rubble of the multi-storey building in the Tal al-Hawa area of Gaza City, its floors sandwiched together.

Locals said 10 families had been living in the apartments despite warnings that they were unsafe.

Members of the Hamas-run Civil Defence rescue service said they had initially been working with “empty hands” due to tight Israeli restrictions on equipment allowed into Gaza. However, they have since been able to borrow some heavy machinery.
