Lord Mandelson should never have been ambassador, says Epstein victim’s family | BBC News

Published

on

The family of Virginia Giuffre, who became the most prominent victim of Jeffrey Epstein, has told the BBC that Lord Mandelson should never have been given the position of UK ambassador to the United States.

In an exclusive interview on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Virginia’s brother Sky Roberts said the appointment “speaks to how deep the corruption goes in our systems”.

Business Secretary Peter Kyle told the BBC it was “highly unlikely” Lord Mandelson would have been appointed if the extent of his relationship with Epstein was known to those in government.

There is no suggestion that Lord Mandelson ever met Giuffre. He said last week, that “perhaps as a gay man”, he never sought or was offered introductions to women from Epstein.

What is Putin’s next move in the Ukraine war? | Global News Podcast

Published

on

As Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky attends the Nato summit in Turkey, Russia’s war effort appears to be under increasing pressure. Ukraine’s drone and missile strikes have reached deep into Russian territory, targeting oil refineries around Moscow and St Petersburg, and leading to widespread fuel shortages and rationing.

But will this push Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table for peace talks, as Kyiv hopes? Or will the Russian leader maintain, or even expand, his war aims?

At the Nato summit, President Donald Trump told Mr Zelensky that he would give Ukraine permission to build its own Patriot missile systems. But he has also been speaking to Mr Putin, as Kyiv and the Kremlin compete for Mr Trump’s attention.

We speak to the BBC’s diplomatic correspondent James Landale, in Washington.

Bayeux Tapestry arrives in UK for first time in 900 years under police guard | BBC News

Published

on

The Bayeux Tapestry has arrived in the UK, for the first time since it is believed to have been created here nearly 1,000 years ago.

At 02:50 BST, chaperoned from a secret location in northern France by a police guard, it was driven into a loading bay at the British Museum, which will put it on display in September.

The 70m-long 11th Century embroidery depicts in 58 scenes events leading up to the Battle of Hastings and Norman Conquest of England in 1066 – the moment that changed the country forever.
