HISTORY MADE! Larry Holmes vs Michael Spinks I | FULL FIGHT | IBF/RING/LINEAL Heavyweight Titles |
By mid 1985, Larry Holmes had made 19 successful defenses of the Heavyweight championship he won against Ken Norton in June 1978, following Leon Spinks’ vacating of WBC title in order to have a rematch against Muhammad Ali.
He was also one win away from tying Rocky Marciano’s record of 49–0. Meanwhile Michael Spinks had successfully unified the Light Heavyweight division and was looking to move up to Heavyweight.
In June 1985 the two of them came to terms to meet in September.
Holmes, who was 6 to 1 favourite entering the bout, had previously beaten Michael’s brother Leon in June 1981.
No current or former Light Heavyweight champion had ever won the Heavyweight title, despite 13 having attempted to over the years.
The last person to hold titles in both divisions was Bob Fitzsimmons who won the Light Heavyweight title nearly seven years after he lost the Heavyweight title to James J. Jeffries.

Leon Spinks 7–0–1 (5 KO) vs. Muhammad Ali 55–3 (37 KO) II, billed as Battle of New Orleans, was a professional boxing match contested on September 15, 1978, in New Orleans for the WBA and The Ring heavyweight championships.
After his shock win over Muhammad Ali to become Heavyweight champion, Leon Spinks was stripped of the WBC belt for not facing its number one ranked contender Ken Norton; instead he agreed to a rematch with Ali. Ali entered the rematch as a 2½ to 1 favorite. The fight was held at the Louisiana Superdome, with ringside seats costing $200 (equivalent to $987 in 2025)
ABC paid $5.3 million ($25.89 million in 2025 dollars) for the rights to televise the fight live in the United States. The broadcast was blacked out in the entire state of Louisiana (except Monroe; KTVE, northeast Louisiana’s ABC affiliate at the time–now affiliated with NBC–is licensed in El Dorado, Arkansas and was not subjected to the blackout) and markets within 200 miles of the Superdome, which included Jackson, Mississippi, Mobile, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida.
