Man behind Gaza’s World Cup screenings killed in Israeli strike | BBC News
A Palestinian aid worker who organised Gaza’s World Cup screenings was killed in an Israeli strike just before Egypt played Argentina on Tuesday.
Mohammed al-Wahidi spent years supporting families in Gaza, working as the director of the Egyptian Committee in Gaza.
About an hour before the game began, an Israeli missile struck the taxi he was travelling in.
He was killed alongside two brothers aged eight and 10, who were walking home after playing football, and another man who was caught nearby.
The Israeli military’s response is that Mohammed al-Wahidi was not the intended target – and that the strike was aimed at a Hamas militant. It says it is reviewing what happened and regrets harm to civilians.
Mohammed’s family says he will be remembered for helping people, supporting families in need and bringing his community together.

US and Iran trade attacks as Iran’s late supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is buried | BBC News
The US and Iran again traded strikes in exchanges that continued into Thursday, as observers reported a “dramatic” drop in the number of ships travelling through the Strait of Hormuz.
The US says it hit 90 military targets, some near the Strait. Iran says 14 people have been killed in the past two days.
State media also reported that targets near the Bushehr nuclear power plant were hit, citing the deputy governor of the province. The US has not commented on the latest strikes.
Iran said it targeted US assets in Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar in response. Later on Thursday, Tehran launched more strikes on sites in Kuwait, Jordan and Iraq, state-linked media reported.
Separately, huge crowds gathered as Iran’s late supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was buried after six days of funeral events.
The “body of the martyred leader of the Islamic Revolution was buried in the memorial hall of the shrine of Imam Reza,” state broadcaster IRIB reported, according to AFP.

Hundreds of residents evacuated after deadly wildfires in Spain | BBC News
At least 12 people have died in a wildfire in southern Spain, with early indications suggesting four of the victims are British, according to a local official.
Hundreds of emergency responders are working to contain the blaze around Los Gallardos, Almería, which appears to have been caused by a downed power line.
The bodies of the victims were found near the small village of Bédar, just outside Los Gallardos, while 23 others are still missing and hundreds of residents have been evacuated.
Regional president Juanma Moreno calls the impact of the fire “devastating” and warns the death toll could rise significantly.

What is Putin’s next move in the Ukraine war? | Global News Podcast
As Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky attends the Nato summit in Turkey, Russia’s war effort appears to be under increasing pressure. Ukraine’s drone and missile strikes have reached deep into Russian territory, targeting oil refineries around Moscow and St Petersburg, and leading to widespread fuel shortages and rationing.
But will this push Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table for peace talks, as Kyiv hopes? Or will the Russian leader maintain, or even expand, his war aims?
At the Nato summit, President Donald Trump told Mr Zelensky that he would give Ukraine permission to build its own Patriot missile systems. But he has also been speaking to Mr Putin, as Kyiv and the Kremlin compete for Mr Trump’s attention.
We speak to the BBC’s diplomatic correspondent James Landale, in Washington.
