The Beatles April 1963: The Beatles Meet the Rolling Stones and John Lennon Becomes a Dad
April 1963 was jam-packed month in Beatles history. In just a few months, the Beatles moved from playing to 20 people to chart-topping stars. It was at what seemed like the height of their fame when they crossed paths with the Rolling Stones for the very first time.
This episode covers their hectic schedule: multiple BBC radio and TV appearances, a silver disc award for Please Please Me, a dramatic tour schedule that took them from Liverpool to London, and their UK number one hit From Me to You. At the Royal Albert Hall and the NME All-Stars concert, they performed on some of the biggest stages of their career so far, sharing the bill with stars like Del Shannon, the Vernons Girls, and Rolf Harris.
But April 1963 wasn’t just about music. John Lennon became a father with the birth of his son, Julian, while Brian Epstein helped Cynthia Lennon during the difficult 48-hour labour. Paul McCartney met Jane Asher for the first time, a relationship that would last for years and inspire some of his greatest songs. And in one of the most historic encounters in rock history, the Beatles met the Rolling Stones backstage, visited their Richmond club, and even went back to the Stones’ flat — the start of a legendary friendship and rivalry.
