The UK is set for wetter and warmer-than-normal weather this autumn, driven by a strengthening El Niño, according to the latest forecasts from the Met Office.

The climate phenomenon – forecast to be the strongest in living memory – will influence a change to stormier conditions later this season.

Denise is one of at least 20 women told they underwent an unnecessary mastectomy at an NHS trust in north-east England.

More than 300 patients have been harmed in County Durham, while thousands more cases are expected to be reviewed, and police are investigating.

The unnecessary breast removals have been described as “utterly unacceptable” by Steve Russell, County Durham and Darlington Foundation Trust’s chief executive, and he has apologised “unreservedly”.

King Charles has warned AI executives of the “existential dangers” posed by the technology falling into the wrong hands.

He made the comments at a summit he had convened at Dumfries House in Scotland to discuss how the tech can be used to benefit society.

Those gathered at the meeting also included Kanishka Narayan, the UK’s AI Minister, the Pope’s advisor, and participants from AI giants such as Nvidia, OpenAI and Anthropic.

It comes amid a series of recent warnings from people inside the industry about the rapidly evolving capabilities of advanced or “frontier” AI models and the regulation needed to keep them in check.

A researcher leaves one of the world’s leading AI companies with a warning that the race to build ever more powerful systems could end in human extinction. Days later, the chief executive of the same company calls for the industry to slow down.

In this episode AI Decoded examines the growing debate over AI safety, regulation and control.
