UK-France small boats pilot plan comes into force | BBC News
The UK’s Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has declined to put a figure on how many migrants will be returned to France under a new scheme that comes into force today.
Some migrants arriving in the UK on small boats will be detained and returned to France under the deal agreed with French President Emmanuel Macron.
In return, the UK will accept asylum seekers who have not tried to cross and can pass security and eligibility checks.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the plan was a “product of months of grown-up diplomacy” which would “deliver real results” but the Conservatives said it would “make no difference whatsoever”.
As of 30 July, more than 25,000 people had crossed the Channel in small boats in 2025 – about 49% higher than at the same point in 2024.
UK and international law prevents the government from sending asylum seekers back to their country of origin before their claim has been considered and turned down. However, they can be sent to safe countries prepared to consider their claim.

They discovered a seaweed that is now known to be an entirely new species to science. The discovery is so new, it doesn’t have a common name yet, so you are being invited to make suggestions.
Now scientifically documented for the first time globally, and shared exclusively with the BBC, and has joined the Natural History Museum’s official collection. We’ve been to under-explored and well-known marine habitats in Cornwall to find out more.

Former cabinet minister David Davis has joined calls for Boris Johnson to stand down while backbencher Christian Wakeford has defected to the opposition, in a difficult day for the prime minister.
Mr Davis said the PM had failed to take responsibility for his actions, following revelations about lockdown parties in No 10 during Covid lockdown.
Mr Wakeford was among the MPs believed to have written a letter of no confidence in Mr Johnson.
The PM batted away repeated calls to quit during the stormy Commons session.

Search and rescue teams are racing to find people missing at a collapsed shopping centre and a damaged paper factory after a strong earthquake hit south-western Japan.
The quake hit Kyushu island at 16:27 local time (07:27 GMT) on Tuesday, with hundreds of thousands of people told to move to evacuation shelters. a tsunami warning was issued for Kyushu’s south-western coastlines, though it was later lifted.
The second floor at the Aeon Mall shopping center in Kashima Town collapsed, trapping people inside.
Tens of thousands of homes were left without power. Prime minister Sanae Takaichi said officials were evaluating reports of collapsed buildings, fires, damaged roads and bridges, and power outages. She urged residents to evacuate to safe locations and remain alert.

Shawn Seesahai, from Anguilla in the Caribbean, had moved to the UK with the dream of becoming an engineer.
Instead, the 19-year-old was murdered by two 12-year-old boys in an unprovoked attack in Wolverhampton.
The boys, who cannot be named because of their ages, are believed to be the youngest people to be convicted of murder since 1993.
The BBC has investigated Shawn’s murder, and has heard how the loss has impacted his family back in Anguilla, who described it as their “worst nightmare”.
