Why is the UK government allowing 16 and 17 year olds to vote in the next election? | BBC Newscast
The voting age at the next general election will be lowered across the UK to 16 for the first time.
Labour’s election manifesto last year pledged to lower the voting age to 16 – in line with Scottish and Welsh elections. The Prime Minister has said 16 and 17-year-olds are “old enough to go out to work, they are old enough to pay taxes”. The policy has been criticised by the Conservatives and Reform party. Adam and Chris are joined by Professor Jane Green – Director of Nuffield Politics Research Centre and President of the British Polling Council.
And, MP Diane Abbott has been suspended by the Labour Party pending an investigation into comments she made about racism, the BBC understands. Labour said it would not be commenting “while this investigation is ongoing”.

Serial sex offender Simon Levy sentenced for murders of two women and rape of third | BBC News
Serial sex offender Simon Levy – who killed two women and raped a third while on bail for other offences – has been sentenced to a whole life jail term.
Levy was found guilty last week of murdering Carmenza Valencia-Trujillo and Sheryl Wilkins in 2025, as well as the violent rape of a third woman.
Levy is a registered sex offender and was being monitored by police at the time of the attacks.

Rescue workers in Colombia are working against the clock to free survivors trapped in buildings and under rubble following Monday’s powerful earthquake.
More than 240 people have been confirmed dead – most in the cities of Cali and Pereira.
The magnitude 7.4 quake struck at 07:34 local time and was felt across an enormous area, stretching for hundreds of miles across western Colombia – with fresh aftershocks still being felt the following day.
A state of emergency has been declared by President Abelardo de la Espriella. Giving an update from Pereira, one of the worst hit cities, President Espriella said as well as those killed, thousands had been injured, and hundreds remain missing.
